2021 MINING SUPPLY CHAIN FORUM
By: Scott Bahr
At Bit Service, we stay up-to-date by actively seeking ways to continuously educate ourselves on the newest trends and events in the mining industry. That is why we were excited to attend a recent gathering of some of the most insightful minds in the industry.
On December 7 and 8 2021, Bit Service participated in the 13th Annual Mining Supply Chain Forum, presented in partnership by SIMSA, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Trade and Export Development, and the Saskatchewan Mining Association (SMA). What was at first expected to be a return to in-person events (the first for our Saskatchewan mining industry since April of 2019) had to be re-evaluated and re-organized with the changing conditions of the pandemic.
After much careful deliberation around the case surges related to the pandemic, the decision was made to pivot to a virtual format to ensure the safety of attendees and participants. This way, organizers could salvage the planning and efforts made thus far. We completely supported what we saw as a wise decision, always seeking to err on the side of caution and public health safety.
A switch to a new online interface was introduced for the virtual format. Thanks to intelligent and innovative technology, the attendees could still visit and interact with the participants and exhibitors through the virtual tradeshow and conference. As for the presentations, they were both intriguing and informative, with the subject matter and topics covering a wide range of relevant issues. These included how manufacturers, construction, equipment and service providers can access mining supply opportunities; updates on projects and operations by Saskatchewan mining companies; and information on opportunities to supply goods and services to the mining industry.
Not only were the topics in the program presentation on point, but those presenting the information were among the highest of experts, and we felt privileged to learn from. It included such names as Kelly Freeman and Chantelle Edwards of Nutrien Retail, Denis Flood of Foran Mining Corporation, Nancee Polley of The Mosaic Company, Tony George of NexGen Energy, Geoff Atkins of Vital Metals, and many more.
The interface successfully brought a new spin to the networking and trade show by incorporating a virtual, video-based component into the mix. This new forum provided participants with the ability to engage in casual conversations and more in-depth, focused discussions about business. The ability to cultivate and nurture relationships with colleagues and clients is what the networking side of trade shows is all about. This show offered a great example of what a virtual format can deliver.
After attending the virtual Mining Supply Chain Forum, we’re hopeful and excited about the future of the mining industry. Meeting, learning, and engaging alongside our colleagues doesn’t have to be stopped or put on hold depending on the ever-changing conditions related to COVID-19.
We are looking forward to seeing more hybrid conferences and exploring other innovative ways to keep connecting with peers and colleagues, even in times of uncertainty.
